The EyeSight software that makes use of a smartphone’s front facing camera to support gesture-based controls has now hit the Nokia Ovi Store. The app is called the Moove MP3 Player . Users of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic smartphone can download the app and control their playlists with gestures by waving their hands over the phone’s front-facing camera
We’ve seen a few iPhone credit card payment systems recently, and now other platforms will be getting the credit card love too, in the form of ROAMpay from QuickPay Merchant Services. ROAMpay is a credit card machine that supports iOS, Android and BlackBerry. Users will be able to key in transactions and generate receipts after that.
PricewaterhouseCooper recently released their Healthcare Unwired report which stats that three in ten Americans would use a smartphone or mobile phone to monitor their health, and 40% would pay for a remote monitoring device. The study also surveyed physicians and found that almost two-thirds of physicians are using their own personal devices for mobile healthcare that aren’t connected to their practice or hospital IT systems, and that many physicians feel that the Internet would help them give access to more patients as time is a constraint in expanding care to more patients. The survey perhaps highlights an important and emerging market for medical management by patients.
While multi-touch is dependent on hardware support, let’s not forget that software support is incredibly important too. Samsung’s i5700 is officially only able to support one finger input at a time, but someone has managed to come up with a hack that will allow multi-touch to operate on the i5700, proving that the lack of multi-touch support on the phone is purely due to the lack of software support, instead of hardware. Rumors of a T-Mobile iPhone have been going around for some time now, and the latest rumor claims that a manager at T-Mobile believes that T-Mobile USA could soon be offering Apple’s iPhone at its carrier stores. While such a move would be good news to many T-Mobile subscribers out there, the rumor also claims that the iPhone mentioned could possibly be the iPhone 3GS instead of the current iPhone 4
T-Mobile is probably busy doing its job of positioning itself as a family-friendly carrier, and now the carrier has introduced a new promotion called Kids Are Free which will allow existing T-Mobile subscribers who sign up for a qualifying family plan through November 2nd to receive free add-a-line service on up to three lines of their plan until 2012. According to the announcement, studies have found that 75 percent of children between 12 and 17 carry a cell phone, which is a statistic that will interest many customers out there if they have kids around that age. While we have word that the Nokia N8 will debut at the Nokia World expo , here are even more hard dates to get excited, as the Finnish cellphone manufacturer will be selling the device for the last week of September before it arrives at third parties and networks from October onwards in the UK, at least. Verizon Wireless ups the ante with a buy one, free one offer for the Samsung Fascinate – although that applies to the hardware only, but you will still need to fork out money for a 2-year commitment for both handsets, coupled with a minimum monthly data plan of $29.99 for each handset.
While it’s still way behind Apple’s App Store and Google’s Android Market in terms of app quantity, the folks at RIM should still be quite happy to announce that it now has over 10,000 applications in their BlackBerry App World application store. While Apple and Google both tout over 100,000 applications in their stores, 10,000 apps is still not a figure to be laughed at. Next RIM will have to ensure that the quality of the applications available on the App Store
